The Greeks and Romans in Primary Schools (GRIPS)

Conducted in 1997/8 and published in 1999, the Greeks and Romans in Primary Schools (GRIPS) Project research was carried out a decade after the 1988 Education Reform Act heralded the introduction of the national curriculum. The study aimed to examine how teachers, pupils and parents or guardians responded to the first ever English national curriculum in history. The research project addressed that question by focusing on the classical components of the key stage 2 history curriculum, referred to in the report as the Ancient Greeks and the Romans.

The clear message from the research was that parents, teachers and children all very much valued learning about the classical world, and mythology was a particular favourite.

The report can be accessed as a pdf here.
